Steve had his hands on top of his head as he gawped at Ariel, which I’d just ordered Erin to briefly uncloak.

‘Holy shit, no fucking way!’ he said. ‘A real, I’m not out of my mind on meds, flying bloody saucer?’

Jack laughed. ‘It’s the real deal, buddy.’

Steve started walking around our ship, waving his arms around. ‘And now I suppose you’re going to hit me with the punchline that a little green alien is your chauffeur and you’re best mates?’

In a moment of perfect timing the ramp lowered, followed by the sound of footsteps descending it.

My old friend froze and went pale as he stared at whatever horror was about to emerge. Then he visibly relaxed when Erin appeared and gave him a wave.

She turned towards me. ‘Fusion reactor is running hot and we’re ready to depart when you are, Lauren.’

Steve’s mouth literally dropped open. ‘You’re telling me you have a working fusion reactor inside that thing?’

‘Yes and it’s about the size of a small fridge, albeit a round one,’ Mike replied.

‘Yeah right, good one mate. The next thing you’ll be telling me is that you have a working anti-grav propulsion system too.’

I gave him a straight look.

He stared back at me. ‘No fucking way!’ he shouted.

‘Shhh, keep your voice down, but yes fucking way,’ I replied, laughing.

Steve whooped and then shot me a guilty look. ‘Sorry, but you know it’s not every day that every sci-fi fantasy I’ve ever had comes true. So did one of your friendly aliens lend you this ride?’

‘No actually, we built it ourselves,’ Mike said.

Steve’s already wide eyes grew even wider. ‘Oh my god, I know I’m seeing it, but I still can’t quite believe it’s actually there. Is there time to take me for a quick joy ride, Lauren?’

‘We would if we could, but we’re on the clock here and need to head out,’ I said.

‘You do know I’m so going to hold you to that?’ Steve replied.

‘Do — it would be great to see you again.’ I turned and gestured to Jack and Mike. ‘You head in and I’ll be along in a moment.’

They both nodded, shook Steve’s hand and headed towards the ramp, Jack taking just long enough to give me a wink.

I stood before my old friend. ‘There is so much more I’d love to tell you about what we’ve been up to, but I really can’t, Steve. But you know that job you offered me? The same goes for you. There is an incredible job of your dreams waiting for you if you ever want it. We need brilliant minds like yours.’

‘Now that’s the most tempting offer I’ve ever had, but I’ve set down roots here now; I have Bridgette and her son in my life.’

‘Of course, but there’s no expiration date on that offer should you ever change your mind.’

‘Got it,’ Steve replied with a smile. He narrowed his eyes a fraction on me. ‘You look like you were born for whatever this is the tip of?’

‘It’s more a case of having to quickly learn to swim or drown.
